Impact Investing Australia and the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne are pleased to host a one-hour online discussion about institutional investors and impact investing on Wednesday 25 September 2024 at 4pm (AEST).

Special guests Kerry Series from NorthStar Impact Funds, Dr Tom Gosling from London Business School and European Corporate Governance Institute and Dr Arjuna Dibley from the Sustainable Finance Hub at Melbourne Climate Futures will join the discussion.

Australian institutional investors have over $3.5 trillion in assets under management, with the largest funds (like Australian Super and the Future Fund) managing more than US$150 billion each. With this weight of assets comes perceived power to contribute positively to a more sustainable planet and communities directly through investment activities or indirectly through influencing others’ investment activities.

Some investors are approaching this from a risk lens, whereby sustainability issues like climate change will negatively impact on financial returns if not mitigated. Others see opportunities to invest in new sectors, innovations and technologies that contribute to positive outcomes for communities and the planet. But there is no consensus on what institutional investors should and could do and what difference it will make to real world outcomes. So, what is the way forward?

Panellists Kerry Series, Tom Gosling and Arjuna Dibley will share their views on the opportunities and constraints facing institutional investors. Webinar participants will be invited to ask questions and contribute to the debate about the role of institutional investors and a more sustainable future.
