Koda Capital’s Philanthropy & Social Capital team has released Matters That Matter, a new paper capturing insights from Koda’s events with non-profit and philanthropic leaders across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

The first half of 2025 has underscored the urgency for Australia’s for-purpose sector to rethink how it operates, funds its mission, and sustains its workforce in an increasingly complex environment.

At this time when many organisations are experiencing high demand for their services and a challenging funding environment, this paper offers insights into how other sector leaders are navigating their organisations through these trying times.

Themes covered include fundraising, attracting and retaining staff, non-profit financial sustainability and more.

The paper also offers reflective questions on each topic, to help you reflect on the insights offered and how your organisation is positioned accordingly.

“The insights shared throughout Koda’s national events revealed a sector under immense strain – grappling with rising service delivery costs, regulatory and political uncertainty, and a growing demand for services that far outpaces available resources.

“Yet, within these challenges lies opportunity: to better articulate the true cost of impact, to advocate collectively for systemic change, and to strengthen the operational and financial foundations of organisations that play a vital role in society.

“What emerged clearly is that resilience in this disrupted era will come from returning to the fundamentals – building strong relationships with donors, investing in talented leadership, and fostering a culture of philanthropy that spans boards, staff, and volunteers.”
