The trend towards electric heavy vehicles is gaining momentum where the transport sector is responsible for about 17% of Australia’s total carbon emissions.
Driving the electrification of heavy road transport is Janus Electric via the company’s unique swappable battery technology, including truck conversions and swappable battery production.
Janus Electric Holdings Ltd, which just listed on the ASX via a reverse takeover of ReNu Energy Ltd, is targeting the more than 124,00 registered prime movers in Australia, and the estimated 5,000 prime movers sold nationally every month.
“We see immense opportunity in digitising and decarbonising one of Australia’s largest industries. With approximately 124,300 articulated trucks travelling millions of kilometres annually, the heavy transport sector presents a significant opportunity for change.” said Janus Electric Managing Director and CEO Ian Campbell.
“Janus is the only company globally with the charge and change proprietary technology converting Class-8 prime mover trucks to electric that we can find, providing an efficient and economic electrification solution for the heavy transport industry while supporting the transition to net zero emissions.”
Powering a zero-emissions heavy transport supply chain
The company is targeting 800 conversions (at approximately $175,000 each) as part of its initial 1% market share goal and has already facilitated the conversion of 23 trucks, with a total of 142 binding orders in the pipeline. The company has scheduled a minimum of 39 truck conversions in the coming 18 months.
“With 142 Truck Conversions already secured, Janus Electric is well-prepared to streamline operations and scale rapidly,” added Campbell, who is also a former head of debt capital markets at Citi.
“Our business model, which generates earnings based on kilometres travelled and kilowatt hours consumed, is continuously validated as we find efficiencies within our Truck Conversions and technology solutions.
“Our vision is to power a zero-emissions supply chain for heavy transport, driven by Australian innovation and manufacturing. This establishes us as a leader in industry transformation, lowers operating costs, promotes sustainable growth, and enhances public health by reducing exposure to diesel emissions.”
Janus Electric lists on ASX
Janus Electric listed on the ASX last week via a reverse takeover into ReNu Energy Ltd, raising $8.8 million at $0.20 per share and is now trading with a market cap of $23 million.
The raise received strong support from institutional and professional investors, underscoring confidence in Janus Electric’s pioneering efforts in sustainable transportation solutions.
ReNu Energy previously invested in green hydrogen and clean energy technologies, including developing green hydrogen infrastructure for the heavy road transport sector. But given the current unfavourable market conditions for green hydrogen investment and recognising hydrogen as a capital-intensive sector requiring substantial upfront investment in infrastructure, the company decided to pursue alternative opportunities.
Proceeds of the raise will support the scaling of the company’s established Truck Conversion operations and innovative Battery and Energy-as-a-Service business model.
It also provides capital runway to accelerate delivery of an existing 142 signed truck conversions, including tier-one customers such as Cement Australia and Qube Holdings Ltd. This supports a strong revenue pipeline, with additional truck conversions under negotiation.
A smarter, safer, and cleaner road transport industry
100% Carbon Zero – Janus Electric offers a zero-carbon battery solution for road transport that uses renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro. Fast-swappable batteries can be recharged in four minutes at special stations that also support energy flow back to the grid, improving renewable energy use and grid stability.
Convert Existing Vehicles – Janus Electric technology allows the conversion of existing diesel trucks into electric vehicles. This retrofitting approach lowers capital investment by up to 70%, making fleet electrification more accessible and cost-effective.
Significant Cost Reduction – Electric fleets reduce operating and maintenance costs by up to 60%. Wear and tear are minimised as there are fewer parts like filters and reduced heat. Electricity is also cheaper than diesel, leading to major long-term savings for logistics companies.
Interchangeable Parts – The Janus battery system is designed to be compatible with future battery technologies. Fleet owners can upgrade as new innovations emerge, and the current battery cells have an estimated lifespan of up to eight years.
Cleaner Work Environment – Replacing diesel engines with electric systems removes noise, vibration, and harmful emissions from the driver’s workspace, improving driver health and creating a safer, quieter environment for everyone on the road.
