Cleaning up “Forever Chemicals”

North Star Impact Funds’ first webinar in its North Star Impact Alpha Series, Cleaning up “Forever Chemicals”, was held last week.

The webinar featured Claudia Kwan speaking with Jason Dixon, CEO Environmental Group, Sean Halpin, CEO SciDev and Oliver Gayner, Principal Lawyer, William Roberts Lawyers, to discuss how we’re addressing forever chemicals in Australia and why it could be a multi-billion dollar opportunity.

Environmental Group and SciDev are two ASX-listed companies that North Star have invested in, which they believe to be the holders of superior technology to clean up PFAS and capture its significant economic opportunity. Oliver Gayner, one of the most experienced PFAS litigators in the country, also provided his knowledge and thoughts.

The panel discussed:

  • The severity of the forever chemicals, or PFAS, problem — how did this chemical come to pollute almost the entire world in the space of 50 years?
  • Global and local legislation developments including the Biden administration’s legislative change to limit the dangerous amount of these chemicals found in drinking water.
  • The remediation technology that Environmental Group and SciDev are commercialising.

While the addressable market for soil and water remediation is difficult to quantify, it’s estimated to be at least $180 billion in the US alone. NorthStar is advocating for regulation to test and remediate PFAS contamination in Australia, alongside increased legislation to stop avoidable PFAS importation.
